Never picked up a soldering iron? Perfect. This hands-on lesson starts from zero, so no skills or experience are required. You'll learn in a small group at our workbench in Townsville, guided step by step by one of our technicians.
Soldering is the skill behind FPV drone builds and repairs, RC hobbies, electronics projects and fixing broken cables and connectors. Learn it properly once and you'll use it for life.
During the session you'll work on your own soldering practice board, so you get real time on the iron rather than just watching.
You'll learn:
- How a soldering iron works, and setting the right temperature and tip
- Safe soldering: workspace setup, fumes and handling a hot iron
- Solder, flux and wire types, and when to use each
- Tinning the tip, tinning wires and making strong, shiny joints
- Stripping and preparing wire
- Soldering through-hole and surface pads on the practice board
- Joining wires and finishing with heat shrink
- Spotting a bad joint, and fixing it with desoldering braid or a pump
- Where to go next: connectors like XT30 and XT60, and FPV drone wiring
